Microsoft Confirms Emergency Updates For Most Windows PCs

In a swift response to the complications arising from January’s Patch Tuesday security updates, Microsoft has rolled out a series of emergency fixes aimed at addressing significant user concerns. Following the installation of these updates, many users encountered issues such as shutdown failures and difficulties with Remote Desktop logins. Fortunately, Microsoft has now resolved these pressing matters.

Current Fixes and Ongoing Challenges

According to reports from Windows Latest, Microsoft has acknowledged and addressed at least two critical bugs. The first pertains to the shutdown failure experienced by users operating older PCs with Windows 11 version 23H2. The second, a more widespread issue, involves Remote Desktop login failures affecting versions 24H2 and 25H2.

The situation has been complex, with Microsoft officially recognizing three main problems. The issues include:

  • A bug causing Remote Desktop Connections to fail (now resolved).
  • A shutdown failure on Windows 11 23H2 (also fixed).
  • A crash affecting Outlook Classic (still unresolved).

The remote login failures have emerged as the most significant concern. Following the January 2026 Windows security update, users reported sign-in difficulties during Remote Desktop connections, impacting various applications reliant on this feature.

For those using the older 23H2 version of Windows 11, the shutdown issue has been particularly troublesome. Microsoft noted that after the January 13, 2026 update, certain PCs with Secure Launch were unable to shut down or enter hibernation, resulting instead in unexpected restarts. Thankfully, this issue has also been addressed.

However, not all problems have been resolved. Windows Latest warns that three issues remain unpatched and have yet to be officially acknowledged by Microsoft:

  • A black screen that appears for several seconds or minutes before the cursor shows up.
  • A glitch that resets the desktop background to black.
  • Malfunctioning of the desktop.ini file in File Explorer.

Additionally, there is an acknowledged issue with Outlook Classic setups, particularly for users with older POP accounts. This problem may cause Outlook to freeze, running in the background and hindering normal restarts. Users experiencing this issue can attempt to force the app to restart, but caution is advised to avoid potential disruptions to the email database. A fix for Outlook is anticipated from Microsoft in the near future.

For users seeking immediate relief, Microsoft has provided two emergency Windows updates:

  • KB5077744: This out-of-band update addresses the Remote Desktop connection failures for Windows 11 versions 25H2 and 24H2. It is available for download from the Microsoft Update Catalog.
  • KB5077797: This update targets Windows 11 version 23H2, resolving the shutdown issue. It can also be downloaded from the Microsoft Update Catalog.
