Microsoft confirms Windows 11 26H2 for fall 2026 release, reveals supported PCs and other details

Microsoft has officially confirmed the arrival of Windows 11 26H2, a feature update set to roll out later this year. This update will not be a major overhaul; rather, it aligns with the company’s strategy to create a more predictable update schedule. Users can expect this year’s feature update to mirror the previous Windows 11 25H2, utilizing an enablement package (eKB) for installation.

Since the last significant feature update in 2024, Windows 11 has seen a shift in its update strategy. The 24H2 version, released on October 1, 2024, was the last major update, while the subsequent 25H2 version, launched in 2025, was built on the same foundational code as its predecessor, offering no new features. Users of either version will find themselves equipped with the same features and improvements, including access to monthly cumulative updates. However, the 25H2 version reset the OS life cycle, extending its support by an additional year compared to 24H2.

Support for Windows 11 24H2 is set to conclude on October 13, 2026, while 25H2 will continue to receive updates until October 12, 2027. As reported earlier this year, references to Windows 11 26H2 have already surfaced in recent preview builds, indicating its preparation for a fall 2026 rollout, likely in October.

Microsoft has emphasized its commitment to delivering a smooth and low-disruption update experience for organizations and IT professionals. The company typically schedules feature updates for October, although they may begin as early as the last week of September or extend into late October, coinciding with the holiday season.

For users currently on Windows 11 24H2 or 25H2, the transition to 26H2 will be seamless, with installation times expected to be under five minutes. The size of enablement packages generally remains below 500KB, allowing for a swift upgrade process that often takes just two minutes. A single reboot will finalize the installation, and users should not anticipate any noticeable changes in their experience.

How long is Windows 11 26H2 supported?

Windows 11 26H2 will be supported until October 2028 for Home, Pro, Pro EDU, and Pro for Workstations editions. For enterprises utilizing Windows 11 Enterprise, Education, or IoT Enterprise, updates will continue until October 2029. This standard update cycle provides consumers with 24 months of support, while businesses benefit from an additional year, totaling 36 months.

Windows 11 26H2 system requirements

Devices currently running Windows 11 24H2 or 25H2 will transition to 26H2 without any new hardware requirements. The specifications remain consistent, necessitating 4GB of RAM, 64GB of storage, and a 1GHz or faster 64-bit dual-core processor.

It is worth noting the existence of another update, Windows 11 26H1, which does require new silicon, such as Nvidia N1 (RTX Spark) and Snapdragon X2. However, users need not worry about missing out, as 26H1 does not introduce exclusive features. Major changes will continue to be delivered through monthly cumulative updates rather than annual feature updates. For instance, an upcoming Patch Tuesday update will introduce support for a movable taskbar, while a recent update has added support for Low Latency Profile.

This shift in how major changes are rolled out—previously included in annual updates—reflects Microsoft’s intention to simplify the update process for customers, particularly in enterprise settings. When asked about the possibility of continuing this trend into 2027 with version 27H2, Microsoft neither confirmed nor denied it. However, reports suggest that Windows 11 27H2 will indeed be a substantial feature update, incorporating significant platform changes and potentially merging the existing 26H2 and 26H1 versions in 2027.
