Microsoft Delays Launch of New Laptops Without Controversial Recall Feature
In an unexpected turn of events, Microsoft announced that new laptops equipped with Windows will start shipping to customers next week without the flagship Recall feature. This feature, which raised concerns about privacy and cybersecurity, was initially touted by CEO Satya Nadella as a significant step towards artificial intelligence machines that can anticipate users’ needs.
Recall works by taking periodic snapshots of a computer screen to give Microsoft’s AI assistant Copilot a “photographic memory” of a person’s virtual activity. However, the company has decided to delay the broad availability of Recall and will first test it with a smaller group of users in the Windows Insider software testing program to ensure quality and security standards are met.
At the Build event last month, Microsoft unveiled a new class of AI-imbued personal computers to compete with Big Tech rivals in the generative AI technology space. The new AI features in Windows 11 will be available on high-end computers from Microsoft partners like Acer, Asus, Dell, HP, Lenovo, Samsung, and Microsoft’s own Surface devices.
