Microsoft fixes streaming issues triggered by Windows updates

Microsoft has successfully addressed significant lag and stuttering issues associated with NDI streaming software on Windows 10 and Windows 11 systems, which arose following the installation of the August 2025 security updates. This resolution comes after the company received numerous reports from users encountering a variety of performance challenges while utilizing popular streaming applications such as OBS (Open Broadcast Software) and NDI Tools.

Details of the Issue

The company acknowledged that users experienced “severe stuttering, lag, and choppy audio/video” when employing NDI (Network Device Interface) for streaming or transferring audio/video feeds between PCs post the August 2025 Windows security update. Specifically, the issues were linked to the installation of the KB5063878 and KB5063709 updates on Windows 11 24H2 and Windows 10 21H2/22H2 devices.

The NDI team corroborated these findings, indicating that the problematic Windows updates could lead to unexpected drops in NDI traffic. Notably, performance issues were isolated to RUDP connections, while traffic transmitted via UDP or Single-TCP remained unaffected.

Resolution and Recommendations

In response to these concerns, Microsoft released updates KB5065426 and KB5065429 on Tuesday, specifically designed to rectify the issues affecting the two impacted Windows versions. The company advised users to install the latest updates, emphasizing that they contain crucial improvements and resolutions, including fixes for the streaming problems. “If you install an update released September 9, 2025 (KB5065429) or later, you do not need to use a workaround for this issue,” Microsoft stated.

For those unable to immediately implement the latest Windows updates, NDI provided a temporary workaround. This involves adjusting the NDI Receive Mode to utilize TCP or UDP instead of RUDP. Users can achieve this by installing the free NDI Tools pack and modifying the ‘Receive Mode’ option to ‘Single TCP or UDP’ within the NDI Access Manager app’s ‘Advanced’ tab.

Additional Updates

The September 2025 Patch Tuesday security updates also addressed another known issue stemming from the August 2025 updates, which resulted in unexpected User Account Control (UAC) prompts and app installation difficulties for non-admin users. Following the release of the August cumulative updates, Microsoft rectified a separate issue that caused security updates delivered via Windows Server Update Services (WSUS) to fail, presenting users with 0x80240069 errors after the installation of KB5063878.

Moreover, just a week later, Microsoft issued emergency updates to resolve a known problem that disrupted Windows reset and recovery operations after the installation of KB5063875 (Windows 11), KB5063709 (Windows 10), and KB5063877 (Windows 10 Enterprise) updates.
