Microsoft fixes the bug breaking app updates on Windows 10

This week, Microsoft informed Windows 10 users about an issue affecting the update process for packaged applications sourced from the Microsoft Store. Users encountered a frustrating “Something happened on our end” error, which hindered their ability to access the latest versions of essential applications, including Microsoft Teams and various third-party programs. Fortunately, the problem has been resolved, and users can rectify the situation by installing a straightforward Windows update.

Details from Microsoft

Microsoft has updated its official Windows Health Dashboard with pertinent information regarding this issue. The company has indicated that users can resolve their app update challenges by installing KB5046714, the most recent non-security update for Windows 10 version 22H2:

Resolution: This issue was resolved by Windows updates released November 21, 2024 (KB5046714), and later. We recommend you install the latest update for your device as it contains important improvements and issue resolutions, including this one.

While the bug was addressed in the November 2024 non-security updates, Microsoft clarified that the issue was not directly linked to any Windows update, whether non-security or part of the regular Patch Tuesday releases. Instead, the root cause stemmed from a version of WinAppSDK, specifically version 1.6.2, which was released on November 12, 2024, and subsequently withdrawn following user feedback.

Non-security updates for Windows 10 and 11 often fly under the radar for many users, as they are not mandatory. Yet, there are instances where these updates become essential to rectify critical issues or to introduce significant feature enhancements. This month, Windows 11 users have been treated to a wealth of new features through updates KB5046740 (Windows 11 version 24H2) and KB5046732 (Windows 11 versions 22H2 and 23H2). Among the notable enhancements are:

  • Shortened date and time display on the taskbar
  • New “Share” buttons for jump list items
  • Improvements to File Explorer functionality
  • Various other enhancements aimed at user experience
