The Start menu, often a point of contention among Windows users, is poised for a significant transformation in the latest preview builds of Windows 11. Renowned Windows enthusiast @phantomofearth has uncovered a redesign that promises to enhance user experience by addressing long-standing grievances regarding customization and functionality.
The revamped Start menu is wider and more customizable
In the recent builds 26200.5518 and 26120.3671, released for the Dev and Beta channels, respectively, the Start menu is undergoing a major facelift. This update introduces a wider layout, moving away from the compact design of its predecessor, which many users found limiting and cluttered.
The new design features a single scrollable view, eliminating the previously required clicks to access the All apps section. Users will now find their applications displayed directly beneath the pinned items and recommendations, which occupy the top of the menu. This streamlined approach aims to reduce the clutter that has plagued the Start menu for years.
For those who prefer a more minimalist interface, the update includes an option to disable the Recommended section. This feature allows users to toggle off recent apps and files, providing a cleaner workspace. The settings can be adjusted by navigating to Settings > Personalization, where users can choose to hide:
- Recently added apps
- Most used apps
- Recommended files in Start, recent files in File Explorer, and items in Jump Lists, tips
- Recommendations for tips, shortcuts, new apps, and more
Additionally, users will have the ability to automatically display all pinned apps without the need to expand the view, further enhancing accessibility and ease of use.
This overhaul marks a significant shift in Microsoft’s approach, as the company appears to be genuinely responding to user feedback rather than merely implementing minor adjustments. However, it’s important to note that this feature is currently hidden within the latest developer and beta builds. To access it, users will need to enable feature ID 4940238, along with the All Apps layouts (feature IDs 49221331 and 47205210). If issues arise, enabling feature ID 48433719 may also be necessary.
