Microsoft has recently rolled out Windows 11 Builds 26100.8313 and 26200.8313 to the Release Preview Channel, reaffirming its commitment to integrating artificial intelligence into its operating system. While the company faced pushback regarding the expansion of Copilot into basic applications like Notepad and Photos, it remains steadfast in its AI initiatives.
Microsoft to Roll Out Taskbar AI Agents on Windows 11; Will Support Third-Party Agents as Well
The latest release notes indicate that Microsoft is set to introduce AI “Agents” directly into the taskbar. These agents, including the Microsoft 365 Researcher, are designed to enhance user workflows by tracking progress and providing timely notifications. Users will be alerted when their research reports are ready, utilizing the Microsoft 365 Copilot icon for easy access.
What distinguishes these AI Agents from traditional assistants is their ability to ‘act’ rather than merely respond. They will function across multiple applications, offering a more integrated experience. Additionally, the taskbar will accommodate third-party AI Agents, broadening the ecosystem and allowing for a diverse range of functionalities.
These AI Agents can seamlessly interact with the desktop environment, summarizing on-screen content, extracting data, automating tasks, and managing various productivity workloads autonomously. The introduction of third-party Agents means developers will have the opportunity to create and deploy their own agents, further enriching the user experience.
It is noteworthy that this initiative has been in the works since Microsoft first unveiled the “Ask Copilot” concept in 2025. The Microsoft 365 Researcher is part of the Microsoft 365 Copilot suite, which requires a subscription for access. Therefore, while the AI Agents are optional, users who opt out of Copilot will miss out on the benefits of Microsoft’s AI applications.
