Microsoft is turning Windows 11’s Notepad into a AI toy with “streaming” where you watch AI text type itself

Microsoft is enhancing its Notepad application by refining the integration of AI through a new update for the Copilot feature. This update introduces a “streaming” capability, allowing users to witness text being generated in real-time, letter by letter, rather than only seeing the final output. This gradual appearance of text aims to create a more organic interaction, particularly beneficial for those utilizing voice mode.

Streaming in AI refers to the method by which text is displayed progressively, enhancing the user experience. Currently, when using large language models like ChatGPT, users often see text appear almost instantaneously. However, the Copilot feature in Notepad has not yet mirrored this experience. Microsoft is working to bridge that gap, aspiring to make Notepad feel more akin to ChatGPT.

At present, this AI text streaming support is being rolled out exclusively for Copilot+ PCs. Nevertheless, Microsoft has indicated that this feature will eventually extend to all regular PCs, including those powered by AMD and Intel, even if they do not officially support Windows 11 but are capable of running it. As noted in a recent post by Microsoft, “Streaming support for Rewrite is limited to results generated locally on Copilot+ PCs at this time.”

AI in Notepad defeats the whole purpose of a ‘simple text editor.’

While the integration of Copilot in Notepad is designed to be an optional feature—albeit turned on by default—one must question the necessity of AI within a tool originally intended for simplicity. For those seeking to generate AI content, alternatives such as the Copilot app, Microsoft 365 Copilot, or other AI platforms like Claude and ChatGPT are readily available.

There are indeed valid applications for AI, yet the need for such capabilities within Notepad to create content from scratch, rewrite text, or summarize information seems questionable. With AI enabled by default, users can select text and access features like Write, Rewrite, Customized Rewrite, and Summarize. Additionally, a customized rewrite function allows for adjustments in length and tone, offering options ranging from formal to humorous.

Moreover, users can alter the format of the text directly from the menu, including a feature dedicated to generating marketing materials. This raises an interesting point: why would one generate social media marketing content within a platform traditionally recognized for its straightforwardness and speed?

How do you turn off Copilot / AI in Notepad?

Despite Notepad’s continued efficiency, the introduction of these features may give it a bloated feel, particularly for users who prefer its original simplicity. Fortunately, those who wish to disable the AI functionality can do so by navigating to Settings > Copilot. However, it is worth noting that this action does not completely remove the Copilot components from the Notepad code; they remain embedded within the application but are simply hidden from view.

As AI continues to find its way into Notepad, Paint, and other applications, users may find themselves longing for the simplicity of alternatives like WordPad or Notepad++. The evolving landscape of productivity tools prompts a reflection on the role of AI in applications traditionally designed for straightforward tasks.
