Microsoft has taken significant steps to enhance the user experience for Windows 11 by lifting two compatibility holds that previously impeded the installation of the Windows 11 24H2 update through Windows Update.
Details on Compatibility Holds
The first hold, instituted in April, affected systems utilizing SenseShield Technology’s sprotect.sys driver, primarily in security and enterprise software. This precaution was necessary due to a known issue that could lead to a blue or black screen of death (BSOD). As of this week, Microsoft announced that the hold has been lifted following an update from SenseShield that rectified the driver compatibility issue. Users can expect to receive the Windows 11 24H2 update within the next 48 hours.
Additionally, another compatibility hold was removed that had been in place since September 2024. This hold was related to certain wallpaper customization applications that were known to cause a range of problems, including errors, improperly displayed wallpapers, and issues with desktop icons and virtual desktops. Microsoft confirmed that as of October 15, 2025, eligible devices free from other safeguard holds can now proceed with the Windows 11 24H2 installation via Windows Update.
However, users may encounter a warning regarding potential incompatibilities with desktop or wallpaper applications during the installation process. A confirmation will be required to continue with the update.
For those who experience ongoing issues with these applications post-upgrade, Microsoft recommends updating to the latest versions, uninstalling the problematic apps, or reaching out to the developers for further assistance.
In recent updates, Microsoft has also addressed other compatibility concerns. Last month, the company removed a block that had prevented PCs with integrated cameras from upgrading due to a face-detection bug that caused freezing in the Camera app and Windows Hello. Another hold was lifted that was affecting Bluetooth headsets and speakers.
For Windows 11 users eager to access the latest features, the Windows 11 2025 Update, also known as Windows 11 25H2, was released on September 10 and is now available to all eligible users. Those with Home and Pro editions of Windows 11, not managed by IT departments, will receive the update automatically, although they have the option to postpone it or select a preferred restart time.
