For many PC enthusiasts, initiating a clean install of Windows right out of the box is a cherished part of the setup experience. However, this ritual has posed challenges for users of Arm-based PCs, such as the Copilot+ models equipped with Snapdragon X Plus and Elite chips. Until now, Microsoft has not provided generic install media that allows for a straightforward reinstallation of Windows on these devices.
Microsoft’s New Offering
Today marks a significant shift in this landscape, as Microsoft has unveiled a dedicated download page for the official Arm version of Windows 11. This new resource is distinct from the ISOs available for the traditional x86 versions of Windows, catering specifically to the needs of Arm PC users.
The availability of this download page opens up a range of possibilities. It not only facilitates clean installs for those who prefer a fresh start but also serves as a valuable tool for reinstalling Windows after upgrading SSDs. Additionally, it enables users to set up Windows virtual machines on Arm-based PCs and Macs, enhancing the versatility of these devices.
Previously, Microsoft had offered install media for select Windows Insider Preview Arm builds. However, these were beta versions, often lacking stability and completeness. While various apps, scripts, and websites have emerged to help users create “unofficial” ISOs for the Arm version of Windows, the process was far from straightforward, requiring more effort than simply downloading a single file.
With this new development, Microsoft is streamlining the experience for Arm PC users, making it easier than ever to manage their operating systems and fully utilize their hardware capabilities.
