In a recent turn of events, Microsoft has inadvertently categorized an ongoing bug related to Windows Firewall error messages as resolved in its latest updates. The tech giant has since clarified that it is still actively working on a solution to the issue.
Understanding the Windows Firewall Error
Earlier this month, Microsoft issued a notice indicating that users would begin encountering Windows Firewall errors in the Event Viewer with the June 2025 preview update for Windows 11. These errors, identified by event ID 2042 for Windows Firewall With Advanced Security, appear each time the system is restarted.
According to Microsoft, the error manifests in the Event Viewer as “Config Read Failed,” accompanied by the message ‘More data is available.’ The company reassured users that while this event is logged consistently upon reboot, it does not indicate a malfunction within the Windows Firewall itself and can be safely ignored.
Microsoft emphasized that these logged errors are tied to an upcoming feature that has yet to be fully integrated into the operating system. However, during the July Patch Tuesday updates, the company mistakenly marked the bug as fixed. This miscommunication was rectified shortly thereafter, with Microsoft issuing an apology for the oversight.
“This disclosure was mistakenly updated to Resolved status on July 8. A resolution for this issue is planned to be included in an update to be released in the coming weeks. We apologize for any inconvenience or confusion,” the company stated.
As Microsoft continues to address this matter, users can expect a forthcoming update that will provide a proper resolution to the ongoing Windows Firewall error messages.
