Microsoft is taking a significant step in enhancing its classic applications by introducing an AI-powered feature called “Write” to Notepad, as part of the Copilot Plus initiative. Traditionally viewed as a straightforward text editor, Notepad is being transformed into a more dynamic tool that encourages user interaction through artificial intelligence.
The “Write” feature allows users to generate and refine text effortlessly. By simply right-clicking within a document, users can access a prompt box powered by Windows Copilot, where they can submit their ideas. The AI then drafts text based on the input, offering options to accept, refine, or restart the writing process. This addition builds upon previous AI functionalities in Notepad, such as the Summarize and Rewrite tools, making it a more collaborative platform for users.
Snipping and painting AI
Notepad is not alone in this wave of innovation; Microsoft is also enhancing Paint and the Snipping Tool with AI capabilities. Paint will feature an AI sticker generator that converts text into images, alongside an object selection tool that distinguishes between foreground and background elements with remarkable accuracy. Meanwhile, the Snipping Tool will now offer automatic cropping and resizing of screenshots, streamlining the process of highlighting important content.
However, these exciting advancements come with certain prerequisites. To access the new features in Notepad and Paint, users must sign in with a Microsoft account and operate on a Windows 11 system equipped with one of Microsoft’s Copilot Plus PCs. Additionally, a credit system will be implemented, which will meter the use of these AI tools, although specific pricing details have yet to be disclosed.
