In January 2025, Microsoft began the rollout of Paint’s Generative Erase feature, followed by the introduction of Image Creator in February. Now, these advanced AI functionalities have been consolidated under a single “Copilot” hub button, seamlessly integrated into the Paint toolbar. This new feature is currently being made available to all Windows 11 users, eliminating the need for participation in the Insider program.
Upon updating Paint from the Microsoft Store, users will immediately notice the transition of the Image Creator shortcut to the newly introduced Copilot button. While the exact timing of this rollout remains unclear, it appears to have occurred just days prior to the update.
Engaging with the Copilot icon unveils a suite of three options: Image Creator, Generative Erase, and Background Removal. Additionally, there is a fourth feature named “Cocreator,” which is exclusive to devices equipped with NPU-based processors, such as the Snapdragon X Elite or Intel Lunar Lake. Cocreator empowers users to transform their sketches into polished artwork, while the Image Creator facilitates the generation of images.
A closer look at the three features inside Paint’s Copilot menu on Windows 11
The first option, “Image Creator,” enables users to craft images through generative AI. To initiate the process, simply select the Image Creator option within the Copilot hub and describe the desired artwork in the text box located on the right side of the Paint application.
Once a description is entered, users can choose from a variety of artistic styles, including Charcoal, Ink Sketch, Watercolor, Oil Painting, Digital Art, Photorealistic, Anime, and Pixel Art. Each style is represented by an icon that visually indicates its effect. For instance, selecting the “Anime” style yields three distinct image variants upon clicking the Create button, allowing users to choose their preferred option. All images can be copied or saved locally, although it’s important to note that a Microsoft account is required, along with AI usage credits.
Generative Erase
The Generative Erase feature provides users with the ability to remove objects from images effortlessly. By simply drawing over the area intended for erasure and selecting apply, Paint takes care of the rest, ensuring a smooth editing experience.
Remove background
The third option, background removal, allows users to eliminate backgrounds from images, saving the final result as a transparent PNG. This feature stands out for its effectiveness and practicality, proving to be more beneficial than the other AI offerings within Paint.
While these features are not entirely new, the introduction of the Copilot menu marks a significant enhancement, now accessible to all Windows 11 users. The consolidation of these tools aims to streamline user experience while paving the way for future AI innovations within Paint.
