Microsoft has unveiled the August 2026 Patch Tuesday updates for all supported versions of Windows 11, marking a significant enhancement in user experience and security. The KB5121000 update for the 26H1 version introduces several noteworthy features, including a new Screen tint accessibility option, a more subdued Widgets experience, and the flexibility to pause Windows Updates for up to 35 days. These features were previously made available to versions 25H2 and 24H2 last month.
Key Features and Improvements
The KB5121003 update for Windows 11 versions 25H2 and 24H2 brings a suite of enhancements designed to improve usability and performance:
- New gesture controls for precision touchpads: Users with precision touchpads can now enjoy enhanced controls that allow for adjusting the baseline speed of scroll and zoom gestures, along with an option for accelerated scrolling. This feature aims to facilitate quicker navigation through lengthy documents, accessible via Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Touchpad.
- Windows Hello improvements: The Windows Hello Enhanced Sign-in Security (ESS) now extends its support to peripheral fingerprint sensors, enhancing security and convenience for users.
- Widgets improvements: In a bid to streamline the user interface, taskbar notification badges will now reflect the Windows accent color instead of the previous red. Additionally, to minimize distractions, the Weather widget will be the sole widget displayed by default on the Lock Screen.
- Windows Search improvements: This update refines the app search functionality, enhancing its ability to manage typos and partial names, thereby improving the relevance of search results for installed apps and settings.
- Voice Access improvements: The Voice Access feature has been upgraded to include Voice Isolation, which effectively reduces background noise and interference from other speakers, making it easier for users to interact with their devices.
- Windows Update improvements: Enhancements to Windows Update Settings now provide better calculations of update progression and optimize system performance post-update through improved clean-up logic.
- Power improvements: Users can once again set a threshold for when the energy saver feature should activate, found under Settings > System > Power & Battery.
On the security front, Microsoft is leveraging AI to address a multitude of vulnerabilities across its Windows components and Office applications. The Zero Day Initiative has reported that a total of 398 Common Vulnerabilities and Exposures (CVEs) have been resolved this month, with 62 classified as ‘Critical’. Notably, there remains one ‘Important’ flaw that is currently being exploited by attackers to execute code at the system level.
