Microsoft starts testing image upscaling and OCR in Windows 11’s Photos app on Copilot+ PCs

At the start of this month, Microsoft unveiled Windows 11 version 24H2, introducing a suite of innovative AI-driven features tailored for Copilot+ PCs. Just weeks later, a notable enhancement is making its debut for Windows Insiders.

Super Resolution and Enhanced Functionality

In a recent blog post, Microsoft shared that Windows Insiders equipped with Copilot+ PCs can now experience the Super Resolution image upscaling feature within the default Photos app of Windows 11. This advanced functionality allows users to upscale images by as much as eight times their original size, leveraging the power of AI and Neural Processing Units found in the latest Snapdragon-powered Windows devices. The processing occurs directly on the device, ensuring swift and efficient results.

Super resolution is perfect for improving low-quality photos, preparing photos for large prints or displays, and tight cropping without sacrificing image resolution to zero in on the content you want to focus on.

Beyond image upscaling, the updated Photos app introduces Optical Character Recognition (OCR) support. Users can easily extract text from images with a simple click of an icon located on the bottom bar, and the app is designed to support over 160 languages.

The latest update also brings several other enhancements:

  • Single-click support in the Gallery: In response to user feedback, navigating through images has become more efficient. Users can now open individual images with a single click, while the traditional double-click option remains available.
  • Zoom feature enhancements: Large images will now automatically resize to fit within the Viewer window, accompanied by improved synchronization between the zoom slider and the zoom selection display.
  • Bug fixes: Improvements have been made to the Image Creator and Restyle image features on Copilot+ PCs, enhancing overall quality.

The latest enhancements for the Photos app are accessible in version 2024.11100.17007.0 and newer. Interested users can download the update from the Microsoft Store, provided their Copilot+ PC is enrolled in the Windows Insider program across any channel.
