Microsoft Tests Windows 11 Support for Third-Party Passkeys

Microsoft is currently in the process of refining its WebAuthn API, introducing updates that will enable the integration of third-party passkey providers into Windows 11’s passwordless authentication framework. This innovative approach leverages biometric authentication methods—such as fingerprints and facial recognition—to offer a more secure and user-friendly alternative to conventional passwords, thereby significantly mitigating the risks associated with data breaches.

Collaboration with Credential Providers

Since early October, Microsoft has been actively collaborating with various credential providers, including notable names like 1Password and Bitwarden. This partnership is part of a broader initiative to develop a new plugin authentication model tailored for passkeys within the Windows ecosystem.

As a result of these advancements, users will soon have the flexibility to select from a range of third-party passkey providers, in addition to the native Windows option. This means that authentication through Windows Hello will allow users to seamlessly utilize the same passkey they created on their mobile devices, enhancing both convenience and security.
