Microsoft is embarking on a series of enhancements to File Explorer for users enrolled in the Windows 11 Insider program, focusing on improved launch speed and overall performance. While the specifics of these enhancements remain under wraps, a notable feature was under trial last November, which aimed to preload File Explorer in the background, thereby streamlining launch times and boosting performance.
This preloading feature, however, was optional, allowing users the choice to disable it by unchecking the “Enable window preloading for faster launch times” option found in the Folder Options under the View tab.
Enhancements and Reliability Improvements
These updates come on the heels of the May 2025 introduction of Startup Boost, an analogous optional feature for Office applications. Startup Boost operates by initiating a Windows scheduled task in the background during system logon, facilitating quicker loading times for Office apps.
In addition, the Windows Insider Program Team announced efforts to enhance the reliability of the explorer.exe process, particularly after users close File Explorer windows. Furthermore, fixes are being rolled out to address the bright white flashes experienced when opening File Explorer in dark mode, a known issue that has affected more Windows Insiders using Windows 11.
This issue was first acknowledged by Microsoft in December, linking it to the KB5070311 optional non-security update. It was noted that the flashes could occur during various actions, such as creating a new tab, toggling the Details pane, or navigating to Home or Gallery. Although a fix was claimed in March 2026 for navigation between pages, Microsoft continues to work on fully resolving this issue, particularly for Insiders in the Beta Channel when launching File Explorer set to open to “This PC.”
Introducing Xbox Mode
In a further development, Microsoft has introduced a new Xbox mode for Windows 11 PCs, offering users a full-screen gaming interface designed to minimize background distractions. The Windows Insider Program Team describes Xbox mode as ideal for those moments when users wish to immerse themselves in gaming, allowing entry through the Xbox app, Game Bar settings, or simply by pressing Win + F11.
These updates are currently being rolled out to Insiders in the Release Preview channel who are operating on Windows 11 24H2/25H2 and have installed the latest Windows 11 Builds 26100.8313 and 26200.8313 (KB5083631).
