Microsoft will still let Windows 11 users send a fax, should they ever want that

Microsoft has successfully addressed a connectivity issue that affected users of eSCL devices, including USB-connected scanners and even fax machines. This bug had previously hindered the functionality of these devices for those who upgraded to Windows 11, version 24H2. As a proactive measure, Microsoft implemented a compatibility hold to prevent further complications for users reliant on these peripherals.

In an official update, the company explained, “After installing Windows 11, version 24H2, you might experience issues discovering USB connected devices that support the eSCL scan protocol. You might observe that your device does not discover the USB connected peripheral and the device discovery does not complete.” This precautionary step was taken to mitigate the impact of the bug, which was first reported on November 22.

On December 10, Microsoft announced that the safeguard hold (ID 54762729) would soon be lifted, allowing users to upgrade to 24H2 without the previous concerns. The company noted that while some devices might take up to 48 hours to receive the update, a simple restart could expedite the process.

Windows 11 Adoption Rates

Despite these efforts, Windows 11 continues to face challenges in adoption rates. As of now, it accounts for approximately 34.9% of all Windows installations, according to Statcounter. This figure pales in comparison to Windows 10, which holds a commanding 61.8% share, largely due to its established reputation for compatibility and stability.
