Nvidia has acknowledged that recent security updates have led to gaming performance challenges for users operating on Windows 11 versions 24H2 and 25H2. In response, the technology giant has introduced the GeForce Hotfix Display Driver version 581.94 to mitigate these issues.
Details on the Hotfix Driver
According to Nvidia’s support documentation released earlier this week, users may experience diminished performance in certain games following the installation of the Windows 11 October 2025 update, specifically KB5066835 [5561605].
This newly released hotfix driver is classified as a beta version, which means it has not undergone Nvidia’s standard quality assurance procedures. Instead, hotfix drivers are expedited through a streamlined QA process, allowing for quicker deployment to address widespread user concerns.
Nvidia elaborated on the purpose of the GeForce Hotfix driver, stating, “This is our way of trying to get some of these fixes out to you more quickly. These drivers are essentially the same as the previously released version, with a limited number of additional targeted fixes.”
It is crucial for users to understand that these hotfix drivers are optional and provided in their current state, emphasizing that they have been subjected to a significantly reduced QA process. The primary goal of these drivers is to deliver timely solutions to pressing issues.
As initially reported by Windows Latest, users can access the driver designed to resolve these gaming performance issues for both Windows 10 x64 and Windows 11 x64 systems via Nvidia’s Customer Care support site.
Broader Impact of Windows Updates
The gaming performance issues are not isolated incidents stemming from the October 2025 Windows updates. BleepingComputer has previously highlighted that Microsoft has had to address several bugs, including those that disrupted localhost HTTP connections, caused smart card authentication problems, and affected the Windows Recovery Environment (WinRE) on devices utilizing USB mice and keyboards.
In November, Microsoft also rectified a Windows 10 update bug that erroneously triggered end-of-support alerts, along with another issue that forced certain systems into BitLocker recovery mode during boot.
Moreover, since the beginning of the year, Microsoft has lifted two safeguard holds on Windows 11 that previously restricted users who enabled Auto HDR or installed Asphalt 8: Airborne from upgrading to the Windows 11 2024 Update, due to compatibility issues that resulted in game freezes.
