OneDrive for Mac will soon give you more flexible storage options

OneDrive for Mac is set to enhance its functionality by introducing support for syncing with removable external drives. This development follows the earlier rollout of the ability to sync with non-removable external drives, marking a significant step forward for users seeking greater flexibility in managing their files.

New Features for Insiders

Beginning today, Insiders can explore this new feature, provided they are using build 25.097 or later. To take advantage of this capability, users must also be operating on macOS 15.0 or later. The external drive selected for syncing must adhere to specific requirements:

  • Formatted for APFS
  • Protected by FileVault
  • Not read-only, a network drive, or marked as quarantined by macOS

While the addition of removable drive support is a welcome enhancement, it does come with certain limitations. Users should note that transferring an external drive from one Mac to another for the purpose of migrating OneDrive files is not permitted. Instead, to switch between Macs, users will need to reconfigure OneDrive with the external drive on the new device.

Microsoft is actively seeking user feedback on this feature. Those interested in sharing their thoughts can easily do so by clicking the gear icon in the macOS menu bar and selecting “Send Feedback.” As of now, Microsoft has not disclosed a timeline for the broader availability of this syncing feature.
