Point-in-Time Restore for Windows 11 is Generally Available

Microsoft has officially rolled out the Point-in-time restore feature for Windows 11, marking a significant enhancement in the operating system’s recovery capabilities. However, the path to accessing this feature is not entirely straightforward. Users must first install the June Week D preview update ahead of the upcoming Patch Tuesday. Furthermore, the rollout is being conducted gradually, categorized as a Controlled Feature Release (CFR), meaning that its availability will vary across devices over time.

Enhanced Recovery Capabilities

Lin Vargas from Microsoft expressed enthusiasm about this new feature, stating, “We’re excited to announce the general availability of point‑in‑time restore for Windows 11, a new built-in recovery capability designed to recover in minutes instead of hours, with confidence, by safely rolling a device back to a previous state.” This feature is accessible in Windows 11 Enterprise, Pro, and Home editions, providing both administrators and employees with a swift, integrated solution to revert their systems to a prior state before any issues arose.

Point-in-time restore serves as the modern successor to the traditional System Restore. While both functionalities rely on the Volume Shadow Copy Service (VSS), the new feature boasts several advantages:

  • Automatic Restore Points: Unlike its predecessor, restore points are generated automatically and encompass user files.
  • Improved Reliability: The implementation of strict retention and cleanup policies enhances the reliability of the restore process.
  • Integrated Management: Users can easily access and configure the feature directly within the Settings app.
  • Storage Efficiency: Point-in-time restore is designed to have a lower impact on storage resources.
  • Remote Management Capabilities: Future updates will introduce Intune-based management, allowing for robust remote oversight of this feature.

For users on Windows 11 Home and Pro editions, Point-in-time restore is enabled by default in versions 24H2 and 25H2. Configuration can be easily managed through the Settings app by navigating to System > Recovery > Point-in-time restore. A detailed write-up on this feature will be included in the Windows 11 Field Guide later this week.
