Scott Hanselman Brings a macOS Feature to Windows

In an intriguing move that has caught the attention of Windows users, Microsoft vice president Scott Hanselman has introduced a feature reminiscent of a popular Mac functionality to Windows 11. This new utility, dubbed PeekDesktop, allows users to minimize all open windows with a simple click on an empty space on their desktop, thereby providing a clear view of files and shortcuts.

PeekDesktop: A Nod to Mac’s Simplicity

Hanselman shared his thoughts on Twitter, highlighting the ease of use that this feature brings to the Windows experience. “Mac has that cool feature where you click the desktop and all the apps get out of the way, you can drag stuff, and then click back and they’ll restore,” he remarked. With PeekDesktop, Windows users can now enjoy a similar level of convenience.

Once installed, PeekDesktop allows for seamless interaction with desktop elements. Users can click on an unobstructed area of their desktop to minimize all active windows, making it easier to access files without the clutter of open applications. A second click restores the windows to their previous state, creating a fluid workflow.

This utility is available for both x64 and Arm64 systems, making it accessible to a broad range of users. However, it’s worth noting that for those familiar with the existing Show Desktop feature or the WINKEY + D keyboard shortcut, PeekDesktop may seem somewhat redundant. Yet, for those who appreciate the aesthetic and functionality of Mac features, this tool offers a playful way to enhance their Windows experience.

For those interested in trying out PeekDesktop, downloads are available on Scott’s Tiny Tool Town website, inviting users to explore this new addition to their Windows toolkit.
