Microsoft is ushering in a new era for its classic Notepad, originally launched in 1983, by integrating AI-powered text editing capabilities. This innovative feature, aptly named Rewrite, is currently available for testing by Windows Insiders. According to the Windows Insider Blog, Rewrite empowers users to rephrase sentences, adjust the tone, and modify the length of their content with ease.
For those fortunate enough to have early access, utilizing Rewrite is straightforward. Users can highlight the desired text within Notepad, right-click, and select Rewrite. A dialogue box will then prompt users to specify how they wish to alter their text—whether to make it longer or shorter. Following this, Rewrite will present three rewritten options for users to choose from, allowing for a seamless editing experience.
To access the Rewrite feature, users must sign in to their Microsoft account, as it relies on a cloud-based service that requires authentication. This feature is being rolled out in preview on Windows 11 across several countries, including the US, France, UK, Canada, Italy, and Germany. Notably, this enhancement follows the July update that introduced spell check and autocorrect functionalities to Notepad.
Generative Tools in Paint
In addition to the advancements in Notepad, Microsoft is also inviting Insiders to explore new AI image editing tools in Paint, which were previewed last month. The Generative Fill feature allows users to add elements to an image based on a specific prompt, while the Generative Erase tool enables the removal of parts of an image, seamlessly blending the remaining space.
Initially, the Generative Fill feature will be available to testers using Copilot Plus PCs, whereas the Generative Erase tool will be accessible to all Insiders on Windows 11. These enhancements reflect Microsoft’s commitment to integrating AI into its suite of applications, enhancing user experience and creativity across its platforms.
