Text Formatting in Notepad begin rolling out to Windows Insiders

Hello Windows Insiders, today marks the beginning of an exciting update for Notepad, now rolling out to users in the Canary and Dev Channels on Windows 11.

Notepad (version 11.2504.50.0)

Notepad window open showing formatted content.

This latest update introduces a touch of elegance to Notepad with the addition of lightweight formatting. Users can now enjoy enhanced flexibility in structuring their content, thanks to support for Markdown-style input. This feature is particularly beneficial for those who appreciate the simplicity of working with a lightweight markup language.

To dive into this new experience, simply utilize the newly integrated formatting toolbar. This tool allows you to apply various styles as you type or to selected text, including:

  • Bold and italic styling
  • Hyperlinks
  • Simple lists
  • Headings

Should you wish to revert to plain text at any moment, you can easily clear all formatting through the formatting toolbar or the edit menu. Additionally, switching between formatted Markdown and Markdown syntax views is seamless, achievable via the view menu or a toggle button located in the status bar at the bottom of the window. For those who prefer a distraction-free environment, there is also an option to disable formatting support entirely within the app settings.

FEEDBACK: Please share your feedback in Feedback Hub (WIN + F) under Apps > Notepad. Your insights are invaluable to us, and we eagerly await your thoughts and suggestions regarding this update!

Warm regards,
Dave Grochocki, Principal Group Product Manager – Windows Inbox Apps
