Over three years since its debut, Windows 11’s taskbar remains firmly anchored at the bottom of the screen, leaving users with limited customization options. Microsoft has previously stated that altering the taskbar’s position is “not important,” a stance it has maintained throughout the operating system’s lifecycle.
This limitation presents users with two primary choices: either continue using Windows 10, which is nearing the end of its support, or turn to third-party applications for a more personalized experience. Among the available alternatives, Start11 stands out, particularly with the release of its latest beta update, version 2.5.
New Features in Start11 v2.5 Beta
The newly launched Start11 v2.5 Beta introduces a significant enhancement: the option to utilize a vertical taskbar. Users can now position the taskbar on either the left or right side of their screens, allowing the Start menu to appear conveniently at the side rather than the traditional bottom center.
To access the ability to reposition the taskbar, users must enroll in the beta program. However, for those who prefer stable software, a full release is anticipated in January. Stardock, the developer behind Start11, has shared the following in their release notes:
Vertical Taskbars – Start11 v2.5 beta brings vertical taskbars to the desktop, this is a free update that will allow users to dock the taskbar on the left and right side of their desktop.
This feature is in beta and does require the user to opt into our betas to try it out – full release is expected in early January.
If you are already a Start11 license holder, you can download version 2.5 at no additional cost. For new users, a perpetual Start11 v2 license is available for .99. In addition to the newfound flexibility of taskbar placement, users will gain access to a suite of features designed to enhance the often criticized Start menu of Windows 11.
