Microsoft is making strides in enhancing its software offerings, and Notepad is the latest beneficiary of this evolution. The company has introduced a new AI-powered Rewrite feature for Notepad, currently available to Windows Insiders running Windows 11. This innovative tool leverages the capabilities of an AI model known as GPT to help users refine their text with ease.
How to Access the Rewrite Feature
To explore the Rewrite feature, users must have the latest Canary or Dev build of Windows 11. For those already enrolled in the Windows Insider program, accessing the update is straightforward. Simply navigate to Settings, select Windows Update, and click on Check for Updates. Additionally, it’s essential to ensure that Notepad is updated to its latest version via the Microsoft Store.
Authentication is required, as the Rewrite feature is a cloud-based service that utilizes AI credits for content generation. Users must be signed in with their Microsoft account linked to the Insider program to access these features.
Using the Rewrite Feature
Once you’re set up, open Notepad and input the text you wish to revise, whether it’s a few words or an entire document. You can initiate the Rewrite process by right-clicking on the selected text, clicking the Rewrite button on the toolbar, or using the shortcut Ctrl + I. The AI then prompts you to specify how you’d like your text to be modified, offering options to adjust the length, tone, and format of your writing.
The AI will generate three distinct versions of your text, allowing you to choose the one that best fits your needs. If none of the options are satisfactory, you can easily tweak the settings and try again until you find the perfect draft. Once you’ve made your selection, simply apply the changes to your original text.
AI Credits and Availability
Microsoft allocates AI credits based on various factors, with initial allocations set at 50 credits for users in the US, UK, Canada, France, Italy, and Germany. Subscribers to Microsoft 365 Personal or Family plans receive 60 credits monthly, which also extends to users in Australia, New Zealand, Malaysia, Singapore, and Taiwan. For those utilizing Copilot Pro, the service offers extensive use of AI features, which suggests a more generous or potentially unlimited credit system.
These AI credits are not exclusive to Notepad; they can also be utilized across a range of Microsoft products, including Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, OneNote, Forms, Designer, Photos, and Paint. Should users exhaust their monthly credits, additional credits can be purchased through a Microsoft 365 or Copilot Pro subscription. Otherwise, credits refresh automatically at the beginning of each month.
Currently, the Rewrite feature is limited to the Dev or Canary builds of Windows 11, indicating that it may take several months before it becomes available in the standard version of Notepad.
