Windows 10 KB5055612 preview update fixes a GPU bug in WSL2

Microsoft has unveiled the optional KB5055612 preview cumulative update for Windows 10 22H2, introducing two notable changes, including a resolution for a GPU paravirtualization issue within the Windows Subsystem for Linux 2 (WSL2).

This cumulative update preview is part of Microsoft’s ongoing initiative to provide “optional non-security preview updates,” typically rolled out at the end of each month. It offers Windows administrators the opportunity to test forthcoming fixes and features slated for the upcoming May Patch Tuesday.

In contrast to the usual Patch Tuesday cumulative updates, this preview does not encompass any security updates.

To install this update, Windows users can navigate to Settings, select Windows Update, and manually initiate a ‘Check for Updates’.

As this update is optional, users who have not enabled the “Get the latest updates as soon as they’re available” feature in Windows Update will be prompted to confirm their desire to install it by clicking the ‘Download and install’ link.

What’s new in Windows 10 KB5055612

While this update does not introduce new features, it focuses on bug fixes and security enhancements. The key changes in the KB5055612 update include:

  • [Internal Windows OS] This update encompasses various security improvements to internal Windows OS functionality.
  • [Graphics] Fix: The GPU paravirtualization check in WSL2 was previously case-sensitive, potentially leading to failures in GPU paravirtualization support.
  • [OS Security] Updates to the Windows Kernel Vulnerable Driver Blocklist (DriverSiPolicy.p7b) have been implemented, adding drivers with known security vulnerabilities that have been exploited in Bring Your Own Vulnerable Driver (BYOVD) attacks to the blocklist.

Microsoft has acknowledged two known issues, which have persisted since the January 2025 updates. The first issue may arise when the Citrix Session Recording Agent (SRA) version 2411 is installed, causing Windows updates to fail. A Citrix support bulletin suggests a workaround: stop the Session Recording Monitoring service, install the Microsoft security update, and then re-enable the Session Recording Monitoring service.

The second issue involves Windows EventViewer potentially displaying an Event 7023 error related to SgrmBroker.exe, indicating, “The System Guard Runtime Monitor Broker service terminated with the following error: %%3489660935.” Microsoft clarifies that SgrmBroker.exe currently serves no function in the operating system, and these errors can be disregarded. A fix for this bug is anticipated in future Windows updates.

For a comprehensive list of fixes, users can refer to the KB5055612 support bulletin.
