Windows 11 24H2 updates failing again with 0x80240069 errors

The recent release of the KB5063878 cumulative update for Windows 11 24H2 has sparked a wave of concern among Windows administrators, as reports indicate that the update is failing to install on numerous systems. This issue predominantly affects users of Windows Server Update Services (WSUS), who are encountering error code 0x80240069 during the installation of the August 2025 security updates.

Impact on Windows Server Update Services Users

Administrators have taken to social media and platforms like BleepingComputer to share their experiences with this frustrating situation. Many have reported seeing messages such as “Service wuauserv has unexpectedly stopped” and “The Windows Update service terminated unexpectedly” in their event logs. One user noted, “I’m in a WSUS environment, the update is approved but all of the existing 24H2 clients failed to install, with error code – Download Error – 0x80240069. Tried to decline in WSUS and approve again, still no luck.” Another echoed similar sentiments, stating, “Same here. I’ve got 100 failures via SCCM with that error code. 2 successful, which likely didn’t get it from SCCM.”

This issue appears to be confined to systems that receive updates through WSUS, suggesting that home users are less likely to encounter these problems, as WSUS is primarily utilized in enterprise settings.

A Microsoft spokesperson has yet to provide a statement regarding the situation when approached by BleepingComputer earlier today. While the company has not officially acknowledged the update issues, some administrators have shared a temporary workaround that involves manually importing the update into WSUS using specific update IDs:

WSUS Sync: Update-ID 8018eab0-7242-4932-adf2-afda36f6b3f6

Update Catalog Import: Update-ID 92061378-be93-4659-a72a-037225e6bb0f

This is not the first time that Windows updates have faced delivery challenges through WSUS. In April, Microsoft confirmed a similar issue that affected enterprise customers, who also experienced Windows Update Service errors with the 0x80240069 code while attempting to update Windows 11 22H2/23H2 systems. The company subsequently addressed the problem in May by implementing a fix through Known Issue Rollback (KIR) for all enterprise-managed devices.
