Windows 11 brings back an old keyboard shortcut for Copilot AI

In a notable shift for Windows 11 users, Microsoft has reinstated the Windows key + C keyboard shortcut, allowing for a seamless launch of the Copilot AI assistant. This change comes with the release of update KB5058502, part of the optional May patch for Windows 11 23H2, which rolled out recently.

Enhanced Copilot Access

Previously, in June 2024, Microsoft had removed this shortcut, opting instead for a dedicated Copilot key on newer keyboards. The transition included the introduction of a voice chat shortcut and a verbal command, “Hey Copilot,” to engage the assistant. Now, users can once again utilize the familiar Windows key + C to initiate Copilot in text chat mode with a simple tap, or engage in voice chat mode with a long press.

Reports indicate that a similar update is set to be released for Windows 11 24H2, further enhancing user experience. For those who prefer to repurpose the Windows key + C for different functions, adjustments can easily be made in the Settings menu.

This shortcut has a storied history; it first appeared as a means to access the Charm menu in Windows 8 and later transitioned to serve Cortana in Windows 10. As Microsoft continues to evolve its operating system, the future of this shortcut remains uncertain, leaving users to ponder whether this will be its final and definitive role.
