Microsoft is currently addressing a newly identified bug within Windows that has raised concerns among users regarding the Recycle Bin functionality. This issue manifests when individuals attempt to permanently delete files, as the confirmation prompt erroneously displays internal system filenames rather than the actual names of the files in question. The company has confirmed that this glitch affects all supported versions of Windows 11.
When users engage in the process of permanently deleting a file, they encounter a confirmation dialog that shows an internal filename format (such as $Rxxxxx) instead of the familiar original file name. It is important to note that while this issue affects the confirmation dialog, the Recycle Bin itself continues to display the correct file names, and the restoration of files operates without any complications.
“When permanently deleting a single item from the Recycle Bin, the confirmation dialog displays the internal Recycle Bin filename (for example, $Rxxxxx.ext) instead of the original filename. The Recycle Bin itself correctly displays the original filename, and restoring the item also restores it using the original filename,” Microsoft clarified.
Microsoft to fix Recycle Bin bug in upcoming update release
The emergence of this issue coincides with the installation of the latest Patch Tuesday updates, which were released on June 9. The bug impacts Windows 11 versions 23H2 through 26H1, as well as Windows Server versions from 2012 to 2025.

This bug is not the sole concern stemming from the June 2026 Patch Tuesday updates.
