Windows 11 build 27764 is out with Start menu improvements and more

Microsoft has unveiled a new preview build for Windows Insiders, designated as 27764, now accessible in the Canary Channel. This latest iteration brings a host of enhancements across various features, including the Start menu, Dynamic Lighting, and Narrator, among others.

Changelog Highlights

Start menu

  • Users can now access jump lists by right-clicking on pinned apps in the Start menu, such as PowerPoint, enhancing the overall navigation experience.

Dynamic Lighting

  • The Dynamic Lighting settings page will display a placeholder message when no compatible devices are connected, with Brightness and Effects controls disabled.
  • New directional options—Forward, Backward, Outward, and Inward—have been added to the Wave effect, alongside a Forward direction option for the Gradient effect.

Input

  • A change is being rolled out to hide the IME toolbar when applications are in full-screen mode for users typing in Chinese or Japanese.

Narrator

  • New functionalities have been introduced to the Narrator scan mode. Users can now skip past links with the shortcut ‘N’ and jump to lists with ‘L’, streamlining navigation through lengthy content. To utilize these features, users must enable Narrator and activate scan mode.

Speech in Windows

  • Improvements to the speech-to-text and text-to-speech functionalities are now available. Users may receive prompts to manually update their language files, which will be released separately via the Microsoft Store.

In addition to new features, several issues have been addressed:

General

  • A bugcheck issue causing some Insiders to encounter a PAGEFAULTINNONPAGEDAREA error has been resolved.

File Explorer

  • Improvements have been made to prevent File Explorer from hanging when browsing folders with numerous media files.

Taskbar & System Tray

  • An issue where widget text overlapped the date and time on secondary monitors for left-aligned taskbar users has been fixed.

Input

  • A fix has been implemented for an issue where enabling pointer trails could render the mouse cursor invisible, accompanied by a black box.

Task Manager

  • Corrections have been made to ensure that some HDDs are not incorrectly identified as SSDs on the Performance page.

Display

  • Lag and screen tearing issues on secondary monitors with full-screen windows have been addressed.

Other

  • A fix has been applied to resolve an issue that occasionally caused Excel to hang upon opening certain files.

However, some known bugs persist:

General

  • IMPORTANT NOTE FOR COPILOT+ PCs: Users transitioning to the Canary Channel from other channels may experience issues with Windows Hello PIN and biometrics, receiving error 0xd0000225. Recreating the PIN is possible through the “Set up my PIN” option.
  • Reports indicate that some Insiders are still facing rollbacks during the installation of the latest Canary builds, with error code 0xc190010.
  • Work is ongoing to resolve issues related to accent-colored window borders, shadows around windows, and animations that appear despite being disabled in settings.
