Windows 11 File Explorer will soon let you turn off OneDrive Backup notifications

In late 2023, Microsoft unveiled a significant feature update for Windows 11, known as the “Moment 4” update. This release brought a fresh look to the address bar in File Explorer, enhancing user experience. However, it also introduced a rather frustrating element: persistent OneDrive backup notifications that flashed for various folders, including Documents and Pictures. After a year of user feedback, Microsoft is finally addressing this issue.

New Options for OneDrive Notifications

With the recent rollout of Windows 11 build 22635.4515, users can now find a hidden feature that allows them to disable these OneDrive backup notifications. This update not only offers the option to turn off the notifications entirely—something many users will likely prefer—but it also introduces a snooze function, enabling reminders to resurface in one month.

In this latest Beta build, users can easily disable the “Start backup” button in File Explorer. By right-clicking (or tapping and holding) on the button, a context menu will appear, presenting the necessary options for customization.

For those opting to disable OneDrive backup notifications, the previously flashing icon will be replaced with a simple PC (root) icon, consistent with other areas of the operating system. Conversely, if users choose to snooze the notifications, the large OneDrive button will shrink to a more subtle size, reducing distractions.

Currently, the ability to turn off the “Start backup” button is somewhat concealed, but it can be activated on Windows 11 build 22635.4515 using the ViVeTool app. Here’s a straightforward guide on how to do it:

  1. Download ViVeTool from GitHub and unpack the files in a convenient location.
  2. Open Command Prompt as an administrator and navigate to the folder containing the ViVeTool files using the CD command. For example, if ViVeTool is located in C:Vive, type CD C:Vive.
  3. Enter vivetool /enable /id:47944061,48433719 and press Enter.
  4. Restart your computer.

Once completed, users can return to File Explorer and enjoy a more streamlined experience without the distraction of OneDrive backup notifications.
