Windows 11 is finally letting you change what the Copilot key does

What you need to know

  • A new Windows 11 preview build has introduced a feature allowing customization of the Copilot key on PCs equipped with a dedicated button.
  • This new option enables users to bind the key to an “MSIX packaged” app, launching it instead of the default Copilot application when pressed.
  • The customization feature is exclusive to PCs that come with a dedicated Copilot key on the keyboard.

Microsoft is making strides in enhancing user experience with the latest updates to the Windows 11 Beta and Dev Channel builds. Among the noteworthy additions is a much-anticipated customization setting for the dedicated Copilot key, a feature that has been on the wishlist of many users since its introduction earlier this year.

Initially, the Copilot key, found on new Windows 11 PCs from various hardware manufacturers, served a singular purpose: to launch the Windows Copilot application. However, with this new update, users can now personalize the functionality of this key. By navigating to the Windows Settings app, individuals can redefine what happens when they press the Copilot key, allowing it to open any MSIX packaged application, which encompasses a range of modern Windows apps and many available through the Microsoft Store.

Microsoft has opted to limit customization to MSIX packaged apps, citing enhanced security as a primary reason. This approach ensures that any application launched via the Copilot key adheres to stringent security and privacy standards, safeguarding users’ data. For those who choose not to customize, the key will continue to function as a gateway to the Windows Copilot.

To modify the behavior of the Copilot key, users can simply navigate to Windows Settings > Personalization > Text input and select the “customize Copilot key on keyboard” option. It’s important to note that this feature will not be applicable for PCs lacking a dedicated Copilot key.

In addition to the Copilot key enhancements, the latest preview build introduces other user-friendly features, such as the ability to share files directly from the context menu in File Explorer and streamlined media player controls on the lock screen, all set to enhance the overall Windows 11 experience.
