Windows 11 has unveiled a new preview build in the Beta channel, bringing enhancements that focus on voice dictation and webcam functionalities. This latest iteration, build 26120.5790, introduces a refined voice dictation experience, now dubbed ‘fluid dictation,’ which Microsoft claims will make the process smoother and more intuitive. Additionally, the update allows users to leverage AI-powered effects from Windows Studio on a broader range of webcams, beyond just the primary camera of their devices.
These advancements are currently exclusive to Copilot+ PCs, with the rollout prioritizing devices equipped with Intel CPUs, followed by those using Snapdragon (Arm) and AMD processors. This is an interesting shift, as typically, Snapdragon devices receive new features first.
Among the other changes, the File Explorer’s Home panel is receiving new hover options for files. Users will now have the ability to open files directly from their location or inquire about them using the Ask Copilot feature. However, this functionality requires users to be signed in to a Microsoft account, which may not appeal to everyone.
Analysis: further flexibility for Copilot+ PCs
While the Ask Copilot option may be perceived as unnecessary clutter by some, the ability to apply Windows Studio Effects to various webcams is undeniably beneficial. These AI-driven features, such as background blurring and simulated eye contact during video calls, enhance the user experience significantly.
The integration of AI into voice dictation is expected to reduce the need for manual corrections, making the process more efficient. Microsoft assures users that this feature operates on-device, utilizing small language models (SLMs) to ensure that no data is transmitted to the cloud. Moreover, for those concerned about privacy, voice dictation is disabled in sensitive text fields, such as password entries, and users have the option to disable the feature entirely if they prefer.
It is important to note that these key features are limited to Copilot+ PCs, leaving standard Windows 11 computers without access to these enhancements for the time being.
