This feature, originally known as DreamScene, allowed users to adorn their desktop environments with dynamic video files, such as MP4 or MKV formats. The latest Windows 11 Dev/Beta build, numbered 26×20.6690, reveals a hidden option that permits the use of video files as live wallpapers. This development hints at the potential inclusion of a curated selection of customized live wallpapers in forthcoming updates, particularly as Microsoft explores support for external files.
For those eager to experience this feature ahead of the general release, participation in the Windows Insider program is required. Once enrolled, users can activate the feature by enabling feature ID 57645315 and subsequently restarting the explorer.exe process to apply the changes.
While the prospect of live wallpapers is certainly enticing, the timeline for their official rollout remains uncertain. It is anticipated that this feature may debut in next year’s major updates, as the current year has seen minimal significant additions. Microsoft appears to be shifting its focus away from the sweeping visual overhauls and extensive under-the-hood changes that characterized previous updates. Instead, the emphasis for the 25H2 update is primarily on security enhancements, delivered as an enablement package.
As the company continues its testing phase, it is likely that more bug fixes and refinements will be necessary before this feature can be confidently released to stable channels.
