Windows 11 will start reminding you to add a password recovery email soon

To fully embrace the capabilities of Windows 11, users are encouraged to create a Microsoft account. While it is technically feasible to operate Windows 11 without one, Microsoft is actively promoting the use of these accounts to enhance user experience. A crucial aspect of managing a Microsoft account is remembering your password, a task that can sometimes prove challenging.

In the unfortunate event that a user forgets their password, the typical recovery route involves clicking the “I forgot my password” link, which triggers a password reset email. However, this process hinges on having a backup email or phone number linked to the account. Without these, users may find themselves in a frustrating predicament.

Enhancing Password Recovery

To mitigate this issue, Microsoft is introducing push notifications within Windows 11, aimed at prompting users to add a backup email address or phone number to their accounts. This proactive measure ensures that should a password slip from memory, users will have an alternative method for recovery readily available.

Currently, these push notification reminders are undergoing testing as part of update KB5053660 for Windows 11 Insiders in the Dev and Beta channels, as reported by Windows Latest. The feature is expected to make its way to the broader Windows 11 user base later this spring.
