Marcus Ash, the Vice President of Design and Research for Windows & Devices, has shared promising news regarding the context menus in Windows 11. In a recent discussion, Ash emphasized that Microsoft is committed to enhancing these menus, aiming to make them “faster and simpler by default.” This initiative comes in response to widespread feedback regarding the cluttered and inconsistent nature of the current context menus, which many users have found frustrating since the operating system’s launch.
Improvements on the Horizon
During a conversation about the Surface Laptop Ultra and the Surface RTX Spark, Ash took the opportunity to address the ongoing concerns surrounding Windows 11’s context menus. He mentioned that Microsoft is working on a more streamlined approach, allowing users to configure their menus based on frequently used options. This customization could significantly enhance user experience, making navigation more intuitive.
Last year, Microsoft hinted at a split context menu design that would categorize options based on relevance. For instance, when right-clicking on an image, users would see a dedicated menu labeled “Photos,” grouping all related actions together. This thoughtful organization aims to reduce the cognitive load on users, making it easier to find the tools they need.
As part of the broader Windows K2 initiative, Microsoft is also focusing on improving the performance of these context menus. While the company has made strides in addressing user concerns, many still feel that the context menus across Windows 11 and its in-box applications remain a mixed bag. A recent overview compiled from community feedback highlights that while progress is being made, there is still work to be done.
One of the persistent challenges is the inconsistency of context menus across different parts of the operating system. Users have noted that even within individual applications, the context menus can vary depending on where the right-click occurs. This lack of uniformity can lead to confusion and disrupt workflow.
In light of these issues, there is hope that Ash and his team will soon deliver on their vision for faster and simpler context menus. Many users are particularly eager to see changes in File Explorer, including the potential removal of the AI actions section, which has not been universally embraced.
