In recent days, users have observed the emergence of a new folder following the installation of Windows 11’s May update (KB5089549). This update, while causing installation issues for some devices, introduces a directory named “SecureBoot” within the Windows system folder. The purpose of this directory may not be immediately apparent to all users.
For those who have been attentive to updates, it is important to note that Windows Secure Boot certificates are set to expire next month. Should these certificates remain outdated, systems will lose support starting in June, which could compromise Secure Boot functionality and heighten vulnerability to malware and cyber threats. Microsoft has been proactively distributing new certificates through Windows Update, ensuring that users who maintain regular updates will likely navigate June without complications.
This update adds a new SecureBoot folder under C:Windows on eligible devices. The folder contains example scripts intended for organizations with IT professionals who actively manage updates across their device fleet. These scripts can be used to detect Secure Boot certificate update status and automate deployment via a safe rollout mechanism in an Active Directory environment. For more information, see Sample Secure Boot E2E Automation Guide.
Essentially, Microsoft has equipped organizations with a collection of scripts designed for IT administrators. These tools facilitate the automated monitoring and deployment of Secure Boot certificate updates across all devices within a corporate network.
Should you delete the SecureBoot folder?
For individual Windows users, the introduction of the SecureBoot folder does not necessitate any immediate action. There is no requirement to modify or delete this folder. In fact, it is advisable to refrain from removing it.
Windows Latest has explicitly warned against the deletion of the SecureBoot folder, highlighting that such an action could lead to complications with future Windows updates. If the Windows Update process attempts to locate this folder and fails to find it, users may encounter unexpected error messages.
