Windows Hello logins are borked for some users after latest update

Windows Hello, a feature that has garnered praise since its introduction with Windows 10, offers users the convenience of near-instant face unlock functionality, akin to what many have come to enjoy on their smartphones. However, recent developments surrounding a Windows update may give users pause before embracing this seamless login experience.

Potential Hiccups with the Latest Update

According to reports from BleepingComputer, Microsoft has acknowledged a bug that could impact a specific subset of users following the installation of the latest update. This issue affects both the face unlock feature and PIN logins, potentially creating a moment of anxiety for those who rely heavily on Windows Hello for quick access to their devices.

While users should not find themselves completely locked out of their PCs—provided they can recall their Windows password—the situation could still be quite alarming. The bug manifests under particular conditions, specifically after utilizing the Settings > System > Recovery tool to reset the PC while retaining local files. The complication arises when users enable System Guard Secure Launch or DRTM post-update.

Fortunately, this glitch appears to be an edge case, affecting only a limited number of users under these specific circumstances. For those who do encounter issues, regaining access to Windows is possible, especially with the assistance of a password manager or IT support. Once inside, users can re-establish their Windows Hello face unlock by performing a new face scan.

The update in question, Build 26100.3775, was rolled out on April 8th. While the potential for frustration exists, the rarity of the issue suggests that Microsoft may not prioritize an immediate fix unless it begins to impact a broader user base.
