Windows tests long-awaited changes to Start, Share, and Search

Microsoft has recently rolled out two test builds of Windows 11, introducing significant enhancements to its core applications and interfaces, including the Start menu, Share feature, and Search functionality. The Windows 11 Insider Preview Build 22635.4950 (KB5052078) is now available in the Beta Channel, catering to users who may have missed an earlier release at the end of January. Meanwhile, the Insider Preview Build 26120.3291 (KB5052080) is being offered as a separate, optional release across both the Beta and Dev Channels. Microsoft plans to merge these two builds into a recommended update later this year.

New Features on the Horizon

The Build 26120.3291 introduces a semantic search capability, allowing users to search by descriptive terms rather than just file names. This feature mirrors the existing functionality within the Photos app, where a search for “beach” can yield relevant vacation images. Users will now be able to extend this search capability to the cloud, utilizing the Windows search function directly from the taskbar. However, it’s important to note that this feature is currently limited to Qualcomm-powered Snapdragon PCs, excluding those with AMD or Intel processors.

In a somewhat unfortunate turn, users of the Recall feature will need to brace for a reset, as all previously saved snapshots will be erased during an upgrade process. While Microsoft has not disclosed specific details about the enhancements to Recall, it does mean that users will have to start anew with their snapshots.

The more advanced Build 22635.4950 is testing an innovative new Share interface, which aims to simplify the process of sharing files on a Windows PC. Traditionally, users have had to choose between various options—emailing, uploading to OneDrive, or sharing via USB. The new interface introduces a drag-and-drop mechanism that resembles the Windows Snap feature. Users can select a file and drag it to the top of the screen to access sharing options, streamlining the sharing process significantly.

Revamped Start Menu and Organizational Features

Additionally, Microsoft is enhancing the Start menu with new configuration options. Users will soon have the ability to choose between a grid view, organized alphabetically, and a new “categories” view. The latter will automatically categorize apps based on usage frequency and other criteria, providing a more intuitive way to access applications.

Microsoft has indicated that these updates will soon be available to Windows Insiders receiving updates based on Windows 11, version 24H2, across both the Dev and Beta Channels. As always, users are encouraged to ensure their Windows Update settings are configured to receive the latest updates promptly.
