Z890 motherboards are having instability issues with Windows 11 24H2 — BIOS updates or disable iGPUd required to update Windows

Recent reports indicate that a considerable number of Intel Z890 motherboards have encountered significant issues following the Windows 11 24H2 update. The initial findings were highlighted by the Spanish PC hardware site El Chapuzas Informatico, which referenced a response from Asus tech support.

Impact on Intel Core Ultra 200S Series CPUs

The problem appears to be particularly pronounced among users of Intel’s Core Ultra 200S series CPUs. These processors, which come equipped with integrated Iris Xe-LPG graphics, seem to be struggling with the latest update. While desktop users typically do not depend on integrated graphics as much as their laptop counterparts, the timing of this issue is unfortunate for Intel, coinciding with the launch week of Arrow Lake.

For those affected, the process of entering and updating the BIOS may vary depending on the specific motherboard model. However, the capability to download and apply updates directly within the BIOS has become increasingly common, making it relatively straightforward for users to implement necessary changes.

Wider Issues with Windows 11 24H2

While Intel is facing scrutiny for these complications, it is essential to acknowledge that this is merely one of several challenges accompanying the rollout of Windows 11 24H2, also known as the “Windows 11 2024 Update.” Other reported issues include Blue Screen of Death (BSOD) incidents affecting Western Digital NVMe drive users, an unusual 8.63 GB cache error, and compatibility problems with Easy Anti-Cheat, which have rendered games like Asphalt 8 unplayable.

Despite these setbacks, there are positive developments for Windows 11 users. The update process has seen optimizations in 24H2, and enhancements such as improved gamepad keyboard input have emerged in newer Windows 11 previews. Nevertheless, it is reasonable for users to expect that Microsoft or Intel would have identified and resolved the critical iGPU compatibility issue prior to the Arrow Lake launch.
