Android 15 Is Here. What You Need to Know about Google’s Latest OS on Your Phone

On Tuesday, Google will unveil Android 15, marking the latest evolution in its mobile operating system. This new version will initially be available for supported Pixel devices, including the Pixel 8 and Pixel 9, with a broader rollout planned for select devices from manufacturers such as Samsung, Lenovo, Motorola, Nothing, and OnePlus in the upcoming months.

While Android 15 may not represent a dramatic departure from its predecessor, Android 14, it introduces a suite of practical features aimed at enhancing user experience. Among these are partial screen recording, satellite connectivity for messaging without cellular service, predictive back gestures, improved in-app camera controls, low-light enhancements, and sensitive notifications for two-factor authentication codes.

New features on Android 15

The primary focus of Android 15 is on bolstering security measures to safeguard personal information, particularly in health and finance sectors, from potential theft and fraud. Additionally, the update enhances functionality for large-screen devices, such as foldables and tablets, enabling users to accomplish more tasks efficiently. Key highlights of the update include:

  • The revamped Theft Detection Lock feature, now powered by AI. This intelligent system can discern when a device is being snatched and will not automatically lock if the device is still unlocked.
  • Enhanced authentication requirements for critical settings often targeted by thieves, such as SIM removal and disabling Find My Device. Android 15 will secure your device after detecting multiple failed attempts, complicating the reset process for stolen devices.
  • A new Private Space feature allows users to conceal sensitive applications, such as banking or dating apps. When an app is stored in this private area, it remains invisible to anyone else who may access the phone.
  • For foldables and tablets, users can now pin and unpin their taskbar, allowing for a customized home screen layout that keeps favorite apps readily accessible.
  • The ability to pair apps enables multitasking; for instance, users can run Zoom and Gmail side by side in split-screen mode.

Furthermore, in-app camera controls have been optimized for low-light conditions, third-party apps gain enhanced camera functionalities, messaging applications can utilize satellite connectivity for text messaging, and users can log into apps with a single tap using passkeys.

Will my phone support Android 15?

As is customary, Google will first roll out Android 15 to its Pixel devices. The list of supported devices includes the latest Pixel models, with additional versions set to be released for select devices from brands like Samsung, Honor, iQOO, Lenovo, Motorola, Nothing, OnePlus, Oppo, Realme, Sharp, Sony, Tecno, Vivo, and Xiaomi.

Before you download Android 15…

As with any significant software update, it is advisable to back up your device before proceeding with the installation of Android 15. If you have automatic backups enabled, you should have a recent backup available. For manual backups, navigate to Settings > System > Backup and select Back up now. Alternatively, you can back up your device to your computer.

How to download Android 15 to your Pixel device

To download Android 15 on your supported device, go to Settings > System > Software updates > System Updates. If the update is available, you will see an update status. If not, click on the Check for update button located at the bottom right. Then, select Download and install and wait for the update to complete. Once the download is finished, your device will restart, and you should see Android 15 in action.

Note: If you encounter a “not enough space available” notification, you will need to free up storage space before updating to Android 15 or opt to use your computer for the update process.
