Android 15, Wear OS 5 make signing in to apps and websites easier

Streamlining the Sign-In Experience with Android 15 and Wear OS 5

In an era where digital security is paramount, Google is introducing a seamless sign-in process for apps and websites on eligible Galaxy phones and smartwatches. With the upcoming One UI 7 and One UI Watch 6 updates, users will enjoy a more streamlined experience that combines account selection and biometric authentication into a single, convenient screen.

During a developer session at Google I/O 2024, the tech giant showcased the enhancements to Android and Wear OS that aim to bolster security while simplifying user interaction. The new approach will replace the traditional two-step verification process with a unified sign-in screen. This innovation allows users to choose their Google account, passkey, or password on one screen and then confirm their identity with their preferred biometric method—be it facial recognition, fingerprint scanning, or a PIN—on the following screen.

For developers, the integration of these features is made effortless through the Credentials Manager API. This tool will automatically activate the new sign-in functionality and ensure that login credentials—whether a Passkey, Password, or Sign In With Google—are readily available in Google’s Gboard app. This functionality is set to be a part of both Android 15 and Wear OS 5.

Samsung devices are already equipped to handle passkeys through the Samsung Wallet app, which is pre-installed on the company’s smartphones and tablets. For a closer look at One UI’s pre-installed apps, Samsung has provided an informative video.

Cloud Restoration and Third-Party Manager Support

Google is also introducing the ability to restore passkeys from the cloud. This feature will allow apps to add restored passkeys to the Credential Manager for offline storage. If cloud backups are enabled, these passkeys can be seamlessly transferred to a new device during its setup process.

These advancements are not limited to Google’s ecosystem; third-party password managers such as 1Password and Dashlane will also support the new features. This collaboration ensures a more unified and secure sign-in experience across various platforms and devices.

The integration of these innovative features into Android 15 and Wear OS 5 represents Google’s commitment to enhancing user experience while maintaining a high standard of security. As the digital landscape evolves, such advancements are crucial in providing users with both convenience and peace of mind.
