Snipping Tool is getting a handy new feature for screen recording

Microsoft has wrapped up the week by releasing a series of Windows 11 preview builds for Windows Insiders, accompanied by an exciting update to the Snipping Tool app. This update brings a valuable enhancement for users who frequently capture and record their screens.

Enhancements to Snipping Tool

The latest version of the Snipping Tool, 11.2501.7.0, is currently being rolled out to Windows Insiders. This update introduces a video trimming feature that allows users to refine their screen recordings directly within the app. No need to switch to Clipchamp or any other video editing software; the trimming can be done seamlessly in Snipping Tool itself.

According to Microsoft’s announcement:

We are rolling out an update for Snipping Tool to Windows Insiders in the Canary and Dev Channels that introduces trim! With trim, you can adjust the start and end times of your screen recordings to cut out any unnecessary video snippets from your video.

To utilize this new feature, users can follow these simple steps:

  1. Record a new screen session using the Snipping Tool.
  2. Open the recording within the app.
  3. Select the new Trim button located at the top of the window.
  4. Use the grabbers to set new start and end timepoints for the recording.
  5. Press Apply to save your changes or Cancel to discard them.
  6. If needed, re-enter the trim feature to adjust any previously trimmed sections.

In addition to the trimming capability, Microsoft is also developing new Optical Character Recognition (OCR) features, which are expected to be unveiled by the end of 2024. A dedicated shortcut for this functionality has been spotted, though an official announcement is still pending.

Other updates for Windows Insiders include a variety of enhancements for Copilot+ PCs, new layouts for the Start menu, and an innovative method for sharing files between devices. For those interested in exploring these changes further, additional details can be found through the provided links.
