Tesco to axe popular app feature leaving customers ‘disappointed’ and ‘annoyed’

In a recent communication to its customers, Tesco announced the impending removal of the “pay in-store” feature, previously known as Tesco Pay+, from its app. This decision has sparked a wave of disappointment among shoppers who have come to appreciate the convenience of paying for their purchases while simultaneously collecting Clubcard points through a simple scan.

Tesco to remove ‘pay in-store’ app feature in March

In its email, Tesco elaborated on the transition, stating, “To ensure we’re able to keep bringing out the best value and convenience, we’ve taken the difficult decision to remove the pay in-store feature, formally known as Tesco Pay+, from the Tesco app.” The phased removal will take place over the coming weeks, concluding on March 7. Customers are advised that any linked card details will be deleted unless they are associated with GetGo, Whoosh, or home delivery services.

As a result of this change, shoppers will need to pay separately after scanning their Clubcard during in-store visits. Tesco reassured customers that they can still earn points and access Clubcard Prices by scanning their Clubcard or app at the checkout, or by integrating their Clubcard with Apple or Google Wallets.

However, the reaction from the customer base has been largely negative. One user expressed their frustration on X, stating, “@Tesco why are you doing this to me? This is my favourite feature of the app. Now I have to scan my card then tap the phone, why are you removing it??? #madting #payinstore.”

Another customer sought clarification, asking, “@Tesco hi understand you’re finishing your Tesco payment wallet on the App and Clubcard recording and payment will then have to be made separately. Any particular reason? Seems a backwards step. Thanks.”

Further sentiments echoed on Reddit, where one user lamented, “Use it daily.. its pretty convenient to me, no need to scan clubcard.. just pay with the app, quite a strange move from Tesco.” Another user added, “I literally use this for every purchase, whyyyyyyyyy.”

One Redditor succinctly summarized the collective sentiment: “Well that’s annoying. I mean, sure it’s only an extra tap of my phone but it’s just easier to do it all in one go. :/”

A Tesco spokesperson addressed the situation, stating, “We regularly review the payment options available to our customers. It’s still quick and easy to earn points on your shopping and fuel and enjoy Clubcard Prices offers by tapping your Clubcard in-store, scanning it via the Tesco App, or by adding it to your Apple or Google wallet.”

As the transition unfolds, customers are left to ponder the implications of this change on their shopping experience. Will the absence of the ‘pay in-store’ feature be felt deeply, or will shoppers adapt to the new routine? The conversation continues as customers share their thoughts and experiences.
