The job listing, which surfaced in a Bloomberg report, suggests that Apple is preparing to cross the platform divide, bringing its exclusive video streaming service, Apple TV+, to a wider audience.
The role involves crafting “fun new features” and contributing to an app that has the potential to reach millions of viewers eager to explore TV and sports content. This marks a significant pivot for Apple, which has traditionally kept its services within the confines of its own ecosystem.
Since its inception in 2019, Apple TV+ has been vying for a place among streaming service titans such as Netflix, Disney+ Hotstar, and Amazon Prime Video. With an array of original content, including award-winning series like “Severance,” “Ted Lasso,” and “For All Mankind,” the platform has garnered critical acclaim and even secured Oscar accolades. Despite these achievements, Apple has maintained a veil of secrecy over its subscriber count.
In India, viewers can access Apple TV+ for a monthly fee of Rs 99, with the added incentive of a 7-day free trial to sample the platform’s offerings before committing to the subscription.
Netflix currently wears the crown for the highest number of subscribers on an OTT platform, boasting approximately 269.6 million paid subscribers globally as of the first quarter of 2024. Analysts attribute Netflix’s dominance to its early start in building a robust user base and its substantial investment in the creation of original, high-quality content that continues to attract and retain viewers.
As the streaming wars heat up, Apple’s potential foray into Android territory could signal a new chapter in the company’s strategy to capture a larger share of the market and bring its unique storytelling to an even broader audience.
