25 Years Later, This Cult-Classic Capcom JRPG Has Been Modernized For PC

Thanks to the dedicated preservation efforts of GOG, the cherished Capcom JRPG Breath of Fire 4 has made its triumphant return with a new PC port. This updated edition of the classic game is notably DRM-free, ensuring a seamless experience for players. It has been optimized for modern PCs, boasting compatibility with both Windows 10 and 11 operating systems. Gamers can now enjoy the game in both English and Japanese localizations, alongside full support for contemporary controllers, including the Sony DualSense.

Enhancements and Features

For those interested, Breath of Fire 4 is available for just on GOG. This new port comes with a host of enhancements, including:

  • The restoration of previously missing sound effects
  • New rendering options for improved visuals
  • Fixes for various issues that previously caused hard crashes to the desktop

Originally released for PlayStation in Japan and the US in 2000, the first PC port arrived in 2003. The game transports players to a fantastical world where two dominant continental powers have been isolated from one another for centuries, separated by an impassable expanse. The long-awaited first contact between these powers ignites a war, setting the stage for the events that unfold a year later.

Players are introduced to a vibrant cast of characters, including the protagonist Ryu, who possesses the extraordinary ability to transform into a formidable dragon. Alongside a band of warriors, Ryu embarks on a quest to thwart an immortal emperor’s ambitions of godhood, a mission that holds the fate of the world in the balance.

GOG’s Ongoing Commitment to Game Preservation

In addition to Breath of Fire 4, GOG has been actively expanding its preservation program. Launched in November 2024 with the Dino Crisis series, this initiative has since modernized dozens of classic titles for PC. GOG is also engaging its community through a “Dreamlist” feature, allowing gamers to vote on which beloved titles they would like to see revived. Currently, classics such as Snatcher, Alice: Madness Returns, and Dragon Quest V are among the top contenders for a new lease on life.
