First look: Google’s Phone app is getting a tasty Android 16 redesign (APK teardown)

In a recent teardown by Android Authority, significant design enhancements have been unveiled for Google’s Phone app, aligning with the Material 3 Expressive design language. This visual refresh is primarily evident in the incoming call and in-call menus, marking a notable shift in user experience.

Visual Enhancements in the Phone App

The APK teardown of the Phone by Google app (version 177.0.763181107-publicbeta-pixel2024) has shed light on these new features, although it’s important to note that not all predicted features may make it to the final public release. The redesign showcases a more modern aesthetic, with larger contact names and caller images that enhance visibility and engagement.

Among the most striking changes are the transition from simple circular buttons to larger, oval-shaped buttons that dynamically alter their shape upon interaction. While the answer call button retains its circular form, the end call button has been enlarged and transformed into a pill shape, providing a more intuitive interface. Additional modifications include:

  • The removal of the “call from” text on the incoming call screen.
  • The display of the phone number immediately after answering a call.
  • A redesigned “more” menu that aligns with the Material 3 Expressive style.

Moreover, the app introduces a subtle animation for the incoming caller’s profile picture, adding a touch of flair to the user experience. These enhancements are part of a broader initiative, as similar Material 3 Expressive updates are also being rolled out across other Google applications, including Google One, Google Meet, and Google TV.

As Google continues to refine its app ecosystem, users can anticipate further visual updates in the months ahead. Interestingly, these redesigns are not exclusive to Android 16; earlier versions of Android are also expected to support these fresh interfaces, ensuring a wider audience can enjoy the improved functionality and aesthetics.
