Lucid Adds Android Auto to Air Sedan in Long-Delayed Software Update

Lucid Motors has officially announced the integration of Android Auto for its Lucid Air electric sedan, a feature that has been highly anticipated since it was first promised nearly a year ago. This integration is part of the latest 2.7.0 over-the-air software update, marking a significant milestone for the company.

Delayed Rollout and Future Plans

In June 2024, Nick Twork, Lucid’s head of global communications, indicated that Android Auto would be introduced to the Air “this Fall.” However, the rollout faced delays, pushing the timeline to June 2025, which extended beyond the initial expectations.

On June 26, 2024, Twork confirmed via social media that the Android Auto software was indeed scheduled for an OTA update for the Lucid Air this Fall. By October, he shared insights about the upcoming Gravity SUV, stating that it would launch with Android Auto support, while the Air was nearing completion and undergoing the necessary Google certification process.

According to the release notes for the 2.7.0 update, “Android Auto phone integration is now available and allows seamless integration of Android™ phones with the Lucid Air’s Glass Cockpit.” The integration offers both wireless and USB connectivity options, with specific Android version requirements for each method: Android 9 or higher for USB and Android 11 or higher for wireless connections.

To activate Android Auto, users are guided to navigate to Settings > Connectivity > Devices and ensure that the Android Auto icon next to their phone appears in gold. If it does not, manual selection is required.

Jean-Philippe Gauthier, Lucid’s head of software engineering and interim vice president of digital, mentioned in April that the Gravity model is expected to feature Android Auto around September 2025. He confirmed that the Gravity platform has been submitted for Google certification, a process known for its rigor, often taking at least six months for approval.

In terms of sales performance, Lucid reported selling 28 vehicles across its four European markets, a modest increase from the 21 sedans sold during the same period last year. Earlier on the same day, Lawrence Hamilton, Lucid’s Managing Director in Europe, expressed optimism about the company’s expansion plans, anticipating a presence in the UK, France, Italy, and Spain within the next 18 months. Additionally, the Belgian and Danish markets are set to be among the brand’s next targets for growth.
