Microsoft has a new tool to get you off Windows 10 and onto a Windows 11 PC

For users of unsupported PCs, the transition to Windows 11 may seem daunting, but Microsoft has introduced two viable options to ease this process. One can opt for the paid OneDrive service, allowing for cloud storage of all files, which can be seamlessly restored when setting up a new Windows 11 device. Alternatively, a new Windows Migration feature offers a complimentary “PC to PC” transfer capability.

With the rollout of Windows 10 KB5061087, currently in testing phases, Microsoft is enhancing its existing Windows Backup functionality. Although this feature has been part of Windows 10 and 11 for nearly two years, it is now receiving a dedicated Migration tool. Observations from user Phantom reveal that Microsoft has discreetly updated Windows Backup to include an option labeled “Transfer information to a new PC.” While this feature is currently hidden in Windows 10 Build 19045.6029, it is clear that it is in the internal testing phase and not yet available for general consumer use.

The first option, “Back up this PC,” continues to function effectively, directing all data to OneDrive. In contrast, the “Transfer” tool resembles the Windows Easy Transfer utility from Windows 7, designed to assist users in moving files and settings from an older computer to a new one via either wired or wireless connections.

Upon initiating the Windows Migration option, users will see their PC’s name and will be prompted to confirm its accuracy when commencing the transfer on the new Windows 11 device. Microsoft recommends that both computers be connected to the same network, although it remains uncertain whether this will be restricted to wireless connections or if wired options will also be available, reminiscent of the Windows 7 era.

The transfer process is designed to mimic Bluetooth pairing, where a code is generated on one PC that must be entered on the other to establish a connection. Once paired, Windows will initiate the copying of files and settings, providing users the flexibility to select which items they wish to transfer.

Microsoft has confirmed that a new way to migrate files between PCs is coming

In a blog post from May 2025, Microsoft announced its testing of a new Windows Migration feature tailored for Windows 11. While the post did not explicitly mention Windows 10, the rationale behind integrating a Windows 7-like Easy File Transfer feature into both operating systems is becoming increasingly clear.

For those unable to upgrade to Windows 11, the suggestion is to replace the old Windows 10 PC and utilize the new Migration feature within the Windows Backup app for a smooth transition.

Additionally, Windows Latest has noted that the PC Health app, a prerequisite for upgrading to Windows 11, prompts users to run the Windows Backup app, facilitating the saving of all essential data.
